science at the kitchen table

Today for science Thomas dissected two owl pellets. The first one he dissected dry with just a couple of sticks and a tweezers. The real fun was when he soaked the second one in water before dissecting it.

Because we all know what it looks like in that jar of water. :) As you can see, both Thomas and Elle got a good laugh from that one!

We were really surprised how many bones there were in just a single pellet. The big find was the skull pictured above.

He then wrote down his findings. I especially like his answer to the last question that asked him if he enjoyed the experiment and if he thought it was successful -

"Yes, I liked this experiment and it was succsessful because we found out what it ate. It was a big mice lover."

I LOVE dissecting owl pellets... I'm a naturalist at heart and an ecologist by trade... glad to see your kids had fun!

Seriously, it looks like they had fun! That pic of Thomas & Elle laughing is so comical!

Right now we are just doing nature walks nothing this in depth. Can't wait!

Did you find the owl pellets near your house?

I am also wondering where do you get owl pellets? My ten year old son would love this. What a great way to make science more fun!

Yuck!!! :)

Judging from these and several past pictures too, Thomas (and Elle too) appears to be a very earnest student!

I hope all is well, all!

I ordered an owl pellet dissection kit from this website - http://www.obdk.com/index.html

There are many sites to order them from though.
